Help choosing a GPS device – hiking, biking and geocaching?

MrMcMonkey asked: I want to buy a handheld GPS thingy (never having used one before) but my mind is boggling looking through all the different ones available. I’d use it for hiking in mountainous areas and probably geocaching, which sounds fun. The Magellan Triton 400 looks quite good, as does the Garmin Vista HCx but the latter might be a bit too much feature-wise for my first…? Can you recommend one? Not necessarily one of the two... [Read More...]

What is the most hackable GPS?

Querious asked: I recently bought a handheld GPS reciever to keep track of where I had gone exploring on my bike. It’s a Magellan Explorist 500. meg_fire21 asked: I am an avid mountian horse back rider and am interested in purchasing a handheld GPS. I don’t even know where to start. I am looking to use it to mark campsites that aren’t necessarily well known to others and also where people have been who have left all their trash and belonging because they were too lazy to pick it up. How does gps work anyways. Can you mark your own spots and name them? Do you have to have... [Read More...]

Why have car manufacturers never installed compasses as standard equipment on cars?

Bottom Contributor asked: This is the most basic and simple navigation tool since the dawn of time. Boat manufacturers install them as standard equipment, why not car manufacturers? I know you can get them as ‘luxury’ items, as digital compasses. I am aware that you can’t put compasses too close to the dash, due to EM interference; however, compasses work fine when stuck on the winshield or near the sunvisor. Every car I’ve... [Read More...]
